The Prince Of Wales Stakes is Group 1 thoroughbred horse race contested over one mile and two furlong (2012m) at Britain’s Royal Ascot Racecourse on Day 2 of the five day Carnival in June each year.

Also the name of a Group 3 weight-for-age race held in October at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse, the Prince Of Wales Stakes was first establish in 1862 and was named after subsequent King of England, Edward VII.

Originally restricted solely to three-year-old contestants over one mile and five furlongs, the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes is now open to horses aged four years or older.

Discontinued following World War II when there was no current Prince Of Wales, the race was re-included in 1968; a year prior to the investiture of Prince Charles as the Prince Of Wales. Interestingly rated at Group 2 level from 1968, the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes was promoted to Group 1 status in 2000.

Won by the John Gosden-trained The Fugue in 2014, the 2015 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes has attracted a particularly talented field including the likes of Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome, standout local The Grey Gatsby and Australia’s-own 2000m specialist Criterion.
